Bhadohi — The Carpet City of India
Where Heritage Lives on the Loom
Every Bhadohi Loom rug begins its journey in Bhadohi, a town where weaving is more than a profession—it is a way of life. Here, generations of artisans have spent centuries transforming wool, cotton, and silk into works of art that travel from humble village looms to homes around the world.
When you bring home one of our rugs, you bring home a piece of this remarkable heritage.
The Heart of India's Handmade Rug Industry
Nestled in the fertile Gangetic plains of eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bhadohi lies just 45 kilometres from the ancient city of Varanasi. To many travelers, it appears to be a quiet town. To the world of handmade carpets, however, Bhadohi is legendary.
Known globally as the Carpet City of India, Bhadohi has earned a reputation for producing some of the finest handmade rugs in the world. For generations, its artisans have supplied exceptional carpets to homes, hotels, designers, and collectors across America, Europe, the Middle East, and beyond.
This is not simply where our rugs are made. It is where our story begins.

A Legacy Woven Through Centuries
The roots of Bhadohi's carpet tradition stretch back to the 16th century.
During the reign of Mughal Emperor Akbar, Persian master weavers introduced sophisticated knotting techniques to India. These traditions blended with the craftsmanship of local artisans, giving rise to the distinctive Indo-Persian style that continues to define Bhadohi rugs today.
Elegant floral motifs, intricate medallions, rich natural colours, and exceptional knot density became hallmarks of the region's craftsmanship.
For more than four centuries, these skills have been passed from one generation to the next—not through textbooks, but through hands, families, and tradition.

Why Bhadohi Is Called the Carpet City
The title was not given—it was earned.
Together with neighboring Mirzapur, the Bhadohi region produces nearly 80% of India's handmade carpet exports, making it one of the most important rug-weaving centers in the world.
Behind this achievement are more than 250,000 skilled artisans, many from families that have woven rugs for generations. Entire communities depend on this craft, preserving techniques that have survived centuries of social and economic change.
Every rug carries not only a design but also the knowledge, patience, and pride of the people who created it.

Protected by History: The GI Tag
In 2010, Bhadohi's handmade carpets received one of the highest recognitions available to a traditional craft.
The region was awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) tag under the name "Handmade Carpet of Bhadohi."
A GI tag protects products whose quality, reputation, and identity are directly linked to a specific place of origin. Much like Champagne in France or Darjeeling Tea in India, authentic Bhadohi carpets possess characteristics that cannot be replicated elsewhere.
It is a recognition not only of the rugs themselves but also of the generations of artisans who continue to preserve this extraordinary tradition.
The Art of Handmade Weaving
In Bhadohi, weaving remains deeply personal.
A rug begins with a cotton foundation carefully stretched across a loom. Skilled artisans then tie thousands—sometimes hundreds of thousands—of individual knots by hand. Row by row, week after week, a design slowly emerges.
There are no shortcuts.
Every knot, every colour transition, and every finishing detail reflects the decisions and expertise of the weaver behind it.
Unlike machine-made carpets, handmade wool rugs improve with age. Their fibres soften, their character deepens, and their beauty develops a richness that only time can create.
This is craftsmanship measured not in minutes, but in generations.
Where Heritage Meets Modern Living
While rooted in centuries of tradition, Bhadohi continues to evolve.
Today's artisans weave both timeless Persian-inspired masterpieces and contemporary designs suited to modern interiors. The techniques remain the same; only the designs change.
At Bhadohi Loom, we are proud to carry this legacy forward.
Every rug we create is woven to order by skilled artisans in Bhadohi, ensuring authenticity, quality, and a direct connection to the place where this remarkable craft was born.
The spirit of Bhadohi lives within every rug we make—a quiet promise of genuine craftsmanship, honest materials, and enduring beauty.
