Nestled in the fertile Gangetic plains of eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bhadohi lies just 45 kilometres from the ancient city of Varanasi. To many travelers, it appears to be a quiet town. To the world of handmade carpets, however, Bhadohi is legendary.

The roots of Bhadohi's carpet tradition stretch back to the 16th century.

During the reign of Mughal Emperor Akbar, Persian master weavers introduced sophisticated knotting techniques to India. These traditions blended with the craftsmanship of local artisans, giving rise to the distinctive Indo-Persian style that continues to define Bhadohi rugs today.

Elegant floral motifs, intricate medallions, rich natural colours, and exceptional knot density became hallmarks of the region's craftsmanship.

Why Bhadohi Is Called the Carpet City

Together with neighboring Mirzapur, the Bhadohi region produces nearly 80% of India's handmade carpet exports, making it one of the most important rug-weaving centers in the world.

In 2010, Bhadohi's handmade carpets received one of the highest recognitions available to a traditional craft.

The region was awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) tag under the name "Handmade Carpet of Bhadohi."

A GI tag protects products whose quality, reputation, and identity are directly linked to a specific place of origin. Much like Champagne in France or Darjeeling Tea in India, authentic Bhadohi carpets possess characteristics that cannot be replicated elsewhere.

It is a recognition not only of the rugs themselves but also of the generations of artisans who continue to preserve this extraordinary tradition.
